Research objectives and content .
The objectives of this research are:- To develop new tools to determine the stability of steel, concrete and composite structures in case of fire. To get these tools, it will be necessary to develop a new shell element in the SAFIR code (it has been developed at the University of Liege). - To increase the safety of buildings in case of fire, through calculations that will simulate the effect of local buckling in case of ISO or natural fire and to reduce the cost of construction. - To get better knowledge of the behaviour of steel, concrete and composite structures. From a scientific point of view, the most interesting is the local buckling of steel structures an the interface between steel and concrete in the case of composite structures - To carry out calculations using the results from real fire tests such as in Cardington, to validate the new shell element. - To carry out theoretical calculations to check different points of Eurocode 3 part 1.2. such as the classification of steel profile in case of fire. The same study was carried out during the BCCF (Buckling Curves in Case of Fire) research. This research was sponsored by the CECA. It will result in a better adequation between theoretical calculations with Eurocode 3 part 1.2. and the real stability of the structure. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The main objectives are to get better knowledge of the local buckling of steel beams and of the behaviour of the interface between steel and concrete in the case of composite structures, when these structures are subjected to fire. By understanding these phenomena, it will be possible to increase the safety of buildings. From an economical point of view, it should reduce construction costs by decreasing the number of fire tests and increasing the efficiency of numerical calculations.
