Experimental determination of crystal-liquid partitioning of the u decay-series elements

Objective

Research objectives and content
The main goal of this project is the precise determination of the partitioning behaviour of uranium decay-series elements between silicate phases (pyroxenes, plagioclase, garnet) and silicate melts under a variety of pressures, temperatures and crystal compositions and to establish a model by that the dependence of the partitioning of uranium decay series-elements between these phases and silicate melts on pressure, temperature and crystal composition can be predicted. The knowledge of the partitioning behaviour of the uranium decay-series elements is pivotal to understand the generation of uranium decay-series disequilibrium generated by mantle melting and fractional crystallisation. A corrollary of this work will be improved understanding of the high temperature geochemistry of the actinides with its increasing relevance for encapsulating and disposal of nuclear waste and reactor accidents (,,melting-down').
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
In the course of the proposed project, the applicant will have rhe opportunity to learn and apply fresh knowledge in experimental petrology. Furthermore, this project would give the applicant the possibility to apply and deepen his knowledge in LA-ICP-MS techniques and last but not least, to complete his analytical competence by learning SIMS, a current state-of-the-art analytical technique with broad applications in both petrology and geochemistry.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
