Nonlocal transport and beam smoothing in laser-plasma interaction

Research objectives and content
The objective of the project is to understand the effects of beam smoothing on SBS and filamentation in realistic 3D. The nonlinear effect of density fluctuations created by the microstructure of the laser beam will be investigated both analytically and using large-scale numerical simulation. This knowledge will give a clear understanding of the life-time and speckle size parameters that can be tolerated, discriminating between ' ' dangerous' ' and ' ' secure ' ' regimes in laser plasma interaction experiments characterized by high convective gain. The most direct application concerns the interpretation of experiments conducted at LULI and similar laboratones around the world.
Trainig content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The project builds upon my previous knowledge of plasma kinetic theory and transport, and extends this to include wave-wave coupling and other nonlinear aspects. A significant component of the project involves the use of large scale numencal simulations using state-of-the-art, high performance computers. The large body of expertise at Centre de Physique Theorique in both nonlinear plasma physics and numerical simulation is ideally suited to assist me. The proximity and level of communication between theorists at CPHT and experimentalists from LULI will also allow me to gain command of technologically important areas, such as laser physics, modern optics, and sophisticated |diagnostic tools (required in the interpretation of experimental results and in suggesting new expenments).
