Search for new particles in final states with jets and missing energy with the delphi detector at lep

Objective

Research objectives and content The project proposes primarily to search for Higgs bosons in the DELPHI exper- iment at the LEP collider at CERN. Higgs bosons are predicted by most theories as remnant particles of the process which gives masses to the matter constituents and to the particles responsible for the weak interactions. The process to study is the asso ciated production of a Higgs boson, decaying into a pair of lo-quarks, and a Z boson decaying into neutrinos. The aim is to reach a very high discrimination between the signal and the background due to standard physics processes (production of W pairs, single W production, production of a pair of lo-quarks plus a photon escaping detec tion). The effort will be on a better energy flow reconstruction for neutral particles and on the optimisation of the current probabilistic analysis method. Once set up, the analysis will be applied to the high energy data to be collected by DELPHI in 1998 and 1999. If time allows, the analysis will also be applied to the search for other new particles with similar final states, like eg sbottom squarks.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
In terms of training, I will work on two complementary aspects of the analysis chain: the improvement of the energy flow, that will teach me about calorimeters, and the optimisation of the analysis method, which will make me familiar with the probabilistic method, a multi-dimensional method easier to use than neural networks. I shall profit from the expertise of the host group, which is one of the most dynamic groups in the DELPHI collaboration and has a solid experience in new particle searches (Higgs bosons and squarks), and from the computing capabilities of the host institution which ensure an easy access to the data of the experiment. Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
