Objective
Research objectives and content The Proposal is intended as fundamental research to provide important tools for the simulation of short fibre reinforced injection moulded parts and their properties. By extending the Elementary Volume Concept (EVC), properties of any short fibn reinforced composite may be determined by transforming the stiffness and compliance tensors with a fourth rank fibre orientation tensor. Unique facilities at IKP will allow processing of injection moulded parts using the push pull technique, providing short fibre reinforced parts with almost unidirectional properties. Sampling and characterisation of such a material will serve to evaluate and verify the extended EVC model. The EVC represents an important link for simulation of mould filling and resulting part properties. The implementation of the EVC in such software packages allows for optimised mould design and optimised part properties of injection moulded short fibre reinforced composites. This would lead to shorter development times and reduced development costs. An environmental and economic impact is also to be expected because of saving raw material with optimised part designs. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) To introduce a more theoretical basis to my research experience and to extend experimental skills to further fields such as polymer processing and special mechanical testing procedures.
