TRADE-OFF BETWEEN REPRODUCTIVE EFFORT AND ANTI-HAEMOPARASITE DEFENSE IN BIRDS: CUMMULATIVE EFFECTS OF LAYING MORE EGGS

Objective

Research objectives and content By comparisons between diferent experimental treatments on reproduction, we will determine whether reproductive effort in Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus is determined by clutch size, and if clutch-size-dependent reproductive effort of both parents affects parasitation independently of food supply. Also we will investigate if the increased parasitemias are associated to a depression of the immune system in odere to exclude other possible causes such as vector exposure. Our results will further our understanding of the operation of reproductive costs and parasite-host interaction in altricial birds, and in probably many other types of organisms. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The research proposal will be carried out in Turku (Finland) during two breeding seasons. During my visit, I would join the research group of the Laboratory of Ecological Zoology in wich I could study factors regulating population cycles of small rodents, life-history strategies and population dynamics of vole-eating predators (kestrels, owls and mustelids). In addition, I will complete the research line on parasite-host coevolution that it has been initiated by this study group. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
