Shearing behaviour of water-saturated spruce wood in relation to the mechanical pulping process

Objetivo

Research objectives and content The submitted project is related to mechanical pulping and especially the refining process occurring at high temperature It should provide new information in order to draw some general lines which could lead to the design of a new refining process requiring a smaller amount of energy for providing a good quality pulp. The study focuses on the effect of a shear solicitation on the deformation and the cell collapse in water-saturated wood. Shearing tests will be performed under static and cyclic solicitation when temperature varies up to 1800C, while a microscope coupled with an image analysis device will be used to observe end quantify earlywood and latewood cell deformation during these tests. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact This project deals with rheology of wood in extreme conditions of temperature and humidity. It is a good project for developing rigour in experimentation and knowledge on measurements methods. Furthermore, STFI is a famous research centre with a good equipment and qualified senior scientists whose contact can be very scientifically profitable for me. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) STFI is jointly financed by the Swedish state and the Swedish industry. This project is then highly linked to the Swedish pulp and paper industry which has chosen to make a consequent effort on research related to mechanical pulping.
