LaRGE SCALE FACILITY FOR MARINE PELAGIC FOOD CHAIN RESEARCH

Objectif

The Marine Pelagic Food Chain Research Facility offers a combination of a strong scientific environment with outstanding experimental installations for research in a key area of marine natural reserves - the Pelagic Food Chain. (F ish Ecology was defined as a priority area in COM(93)95 European Fisheries Research.)
The integrated high-quality research facilities offer a rare combination of possibilities for laboratory-based and natural environment research on planktonic food chain dynamics and early life history of fish and shellfish, fish recruitment and environmental health all within one hour travel distance.
The LSF offers a sophisticated infrastructure of sea-water laboratories for studying impact of environmental factors on marine organisms and on sustainable juvenile production or marine fish and shellfish. An international laboratory in molecular marine biology organised on the EMBL model is proposed in Bergen. A floating laboratory for mesocosm studies is especially suited for large-scale experimental work on primary and secondary production, planktonic succession and environmental health under controlled conditions. A large-Scale semi-enclosed lagoon and an isolated basin are accessible and represent unique experimental installations or studies of food chain dynamics and larval fish ecology. Well described ecosystems ('Model environments'; accessible by research vessels) are appropriate for studies of natural and antropogenic factors.
