Elettra is a new third generation Synchrotron Radiation Facility located in Trieste which has just opened two beamlines to external users. Two more are going to be ready by July 1995. Elettra is a high brilliance storage ring with record photon flux and energy resolution beamlines in the soft X ray range. At the moment Elettra advanced specifications make it unique of its kind in Europe The characteristics of the available beamlines at the beginning of 1995 or in the following months are:
i) SuperESCA:
This beamline works in the soft Xray range (100+1500 eV). It allows to take high photon flux and energy resolution spectra. It is of special interest in core levels photoemission spectroscopy of elements of technological importance. Due to its fast data colection time (an ESCA spectrum can be taken in less than one second) it allows tirne resolved experiments.
ii) Pbotoemission Spectroscopy:
This beamline works in the VUV energy range ((2O+850 eV) and makes it possible to take photoemission spectra of the valence band of solids with unprecedented combined high energy, momentum resolution and photon flux. These features are specifically directed toward experimental studies on the electronic structure of new high Tc superconductors, semiconductors and semiconductor-metal heterojunctions.
iii) X-ray Diffraction:
This beamline allows crystallographic measurements of very small biological crystals with unprecedented accuracy.
iv) ESCAmicroscopy:
It allows to make scanning ESCA microscopy measurements with a lateral resolution of 1000 A. It is ideal for the study of composite materials. The research areas which can be covered with these beamlines an: solid state physics, surface science, material science, catalysis, corrosion, crystallography, biochemistry, applied surface science, industrial research.
This proposal is intended to allow the use of Elettra to about 150 scientists each year coming from EU member countries within the frame of the Large Installation Programme for a total amount of 4000 beamtime hours/year and for a duration of the programme of three years beginning in June 1996.
