Large-Scale Geochemical Facility

Objetivo

Principal characteristics of the facility and of the support offered to users:
The facility contains a large number of modern instruments which were purchased and developed in order to turn the Department of Geology into an international-class research department. Earth and environmental sciences are interdisciplinary and rely heavily on such instrumental methods for the geochemical and isotopic analysis of minerals, rocks and natural waters. Available in the facility under a single manager are: 2 Electron Microprobes, ICP-MS and ICP-AES spectrometers, 2 Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometers, Scanning Electron Microscope, 4 Experimental Geochemistry Laboratories, FTIR and Mossbauer Spectrometers, Carbon and Sulphur analyser and X-ray Diffractometer. The facility manager is a director of the nearby Interface Analysis Centre which provides surface analysis using:- Auger, SIMS, XPS and Laser Raman Spectroscopy. The facility is a vibrant research environment, currently used by approximately 55 researchers of the Department of Geology and supported by 7 full time research staff. It is underpinned by an excellent workshop and a computer network of 140 microcomputers and workstations. This environment and degree of support provides the means for TMR visitors to produce and interpret state-of-the-art geochemical data.
