The alomar lsf

Objective

Principal characteristics of the facility and of the support offered to users:
The Norwegian Space Centre/Andoya Rocket Range has established a new international research facility, ALOMAR for studies of the Arctic middle atmosphere. The facility comprises an observatory with opticalinstruments and radars. The observatory is located close to the Andoya Rocket Range (69r 30' N, 16r OO' E) on the . island Andoya in North Norway. Andoya is easily accessible by commercial air transport (several daily flights. 3 . hours from Oslo). The climate is mild, even in mid-winter.
The science of ALOMAR is focussed upon environmental issues such as atmospheric energy and radiation balance, ozone and aerosols, ultraviolet radiation and its biological effects. Satellite calibration and validation, atmospheric, modelling and education will be of importance. The ALOMAR optical observatory is a two story building with a total of 400 m2 air-conditioned, clean-roomstandard laboratory space. The building has optical domes and a large telescope hall with a retractable roof. It provides excellent facilities for personnel.
The ALOMAR facility offers access to European scientists who would wish to study the arctic middle atmosphere a) by bringing their own instruments, b) by using the Norwegian-owned complement of lidar, radars and other instruments c) by using the ALOMAR data bank and d) by collaborating with other ALOMAR scientists.
Quantity of access being offered and number of users who may benefit: ALOMAR-LSF is open 24 hours a day all through the year. It can offer about 2500 experiment days per year to LSF users, that is a total of 7500 experiment days over the three year period covered by the application. The facility has space available for up to six guest investigators at any time. Assuming that each investigator typically stays for two months at ALOMAR, about 36 scientists can participate each year, that is a total of more than 100 guest investigators over the application period.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
