Objective
Principal characteristics of the facility and of the support offered to users:
The facility has available about 210 test tanks for controlled disease and toxicological experirnents on all species of aquatic organisms. The facility can provide a full range of water qualities with respect to salinity and ternperature. Trials are conducted on any species at any variable water parameter. VESO Vikan AkvaVet is operated according to OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practices and was certified in September 1996 with regards to the OECD guidelines and to EU Council Directive 88/320-EEC. .
Scientific support will include advice on experimental design, and methodology, licenses for the use of Vikan AkvaVet standardized experimental protocols, documentation of results for all experiments conducted during the project, and appropriate sampling and conservation of samples. Scientific advice as to the standardisation and modification of testing procedures.
Living, working and conference buildings are located at the facility. Quantity of access being offered and number of users who may benefit: VESO Vikan AkvaVet offers to the TMR programme aecess to all tank types and water qualities equivalent to the pemmanent use of two isolates for 36 months. VESO Vikan AkvaVet offers a flexible scheduling of access summing up to an equivalent of 9500 tank-days per year, or 28500 tank-days for the project period of three years. The access will comprise of use of tanks including maintenance, water supply, daily feeding and husbandry of fish, manipulation and handling of fish. Access to all dry laboratory facilities and other infrastructural, logistical, technical and scientific support normally provided to external users is offered, as well as accommodation and office access with PC and international phone, fax and internet communications.
With an estimated average project comprising 10 experimental tanks for three months, involving t vo researchers spending three weeks at the facility during the experimental period, it is estimated that approximately 15 projects involving 30 researchers would be conducted under this project annually.
