Family change and the welfare state in europe: long-term developments, new challenges, and institution-building

Objective

The young researchers will be offered courses, work-shops, and participation in research. We hope to form a group that will take an state, and family changes have posed major social problems. Welfare state institutions greatly vary from country to country, whereas family changes European view of our societies, and will gather a profound knowledge of data sources and analytic concepts for comparative research on Europe. have been more similar across Europe. Moreover, most institutions have not been created for the family's sake and have developed inherent dynamics. How can we explain institutional variation in Europe and what have been the consequences as to institution - building? These questions will be studied in a comprehensive, long-term, and comparative perspective: comprehensive, by covering family law, income policies and social services as well as family changes, employment and family income; long-term, by spanning a whole century although focusing on the period since the 1960s; comparative, by doing analysis of sixteen European countries from a common approach. This perspective is most innovative and fills a significant gap in research, which has so far mainly taken a narrow, short-term and descriptive view.
