Measurement of vertical crustal motion in Europe by vlbi

Objetivo

The training scheme will be implemented chiefly through temporary employment of visiting young post-doctoral researchers from the the Earth's surface by measuring the vertical position differences between distant points with very high accuracy at regular intervals of time. The participating countries, but we also plan to recruit students in their final years on part-time basis in order to stimulate the interest of young project is a continuation and expansion of an initial proposal under the talents in the new developments in geoscience, and
Science Program, in which a European network of six radio telescopes has been organised to use the geodetic VLBI-technique
information/communication technology.
(Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry) in regular campaigns for measuring horizontal crustal motion.
Although horizontal motion has been successfully detected already, the determination of vertical motion has proved to be much more difficult due to the influence of systematic errors. Together with the existing data from the initial phase, this project will achieve a total observation time series of little less than 10 years. With a refined modelling of the atmospheric effects this longer data set should yield a significance for vertical motions on the order of a few millimetres per year. The data set will be of high significance for the monitoring of land uplift and subsidence, sea level changes, glaciology and other vertical motion applications. The results will contribute to the evaluation of global climatic changes and other environmental effects.
