Objective
The Network will provide 336 person-months of training to young important and highly challenging ones in ab-initio electronic structure post-doctoral researchers. Networking money is also available to Ph.D. calculations of magnetic properties. Four of these projects will include students of the teams, leading to an additional 80 person-months of studies of the most recent discoveries of interlayer coupling, giant training at partner institutions. Moreover, we will organize an annual magnetoresistance and magnetic X-ray dichroism. The remaining two projects Network meeting, a hands-on course and a summer school.
concern the implementation of new technical developments in electronic structure calculations to construct a new generation of codes able to deal with ever larger systems.
The primary aim would be to provide a basic understanding of interlayer coupling, giant magnetoresistance and surface structure by performing quantitative ab-initio calculations for realistic systems. Moreover, and also in response to the need of our experimental friends, the validity of these calculations would be verified by detailed comparison against experimental data, spectroscopic ones in particular. Finally, and of large potential industrial impact, our proposal would also address the huge problem of understanding the effects of disorder in these layered materials on a microscopic scale.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
