This technology developed in the UK, which has led to several International patents, involves the external lateral pre-tensioning of Reinforced Concrete (RC), leading to a better utilisation of the confining materials and ductile RC elements. It is known that the strength and ductility of RC can be enhanced by lateral confinement. Traditionally this is achieved by providing suitable steel links at the construction stage. Due to a variety of reasons, the strengthening of RC columns and flexural elements is required. However, conventional techniques, such as jacketing, are very expensive. Recently, advanced composite materials (also know as FRP – Fibre Reinforced Composites) and high tensile steel are used to strengthen RC. However, in full-scale applications, due to the relatively small confinement provided, these materials are rarely well utilised, and concrete can fracture well before their full mobilisation. The confining materials can be pre-tensioned (either directly or through expansive agents) so that their full potential is reached prior to the fracture of the concrete. This can lead to guaranteed enhancement in strength and ductility.
This new punching shear reinforcement system developed in the UK, has led to several International patents. The new shear reinforcement system, called the Shearband, differs from all existing systems because: - It has a small thickness and can be placed on top of all other reinforcements, with minimal loss of cover. This has huge benefits such as an increase of the effective depth of flexural reinforcement, the simple and efficient placement of reinforcement, the ability to anchor to all the upper layers of reinforcement, or all the bottom reinforcement when necessary, and it acts over the entire concrete core. - It is an adaptable system that can accommodate greater tolerances in placement, and simply and uniquely enables the quick addition of extra reinforcement where required. In addition: - It can be designed by using the existing design codes. - It can be used in addition to other systems. - It is light, requiring only man-handling. - It is easy to store on or off site. - It can allow for the design of thinner slabs with all the added benefits. - All the reinforcement placed is useful. - There is no undesirable increase in the slab's flexural capacity.
