Positioning and Characterization of Ligand Stabilized Metal Clusters on Surfaces and In Confinements

Objetivo

The goal of this project is to synthesize ligand stabilized metal clusters of quantum dot size and position such dots on surfaces, and in confined spaces in a regularly spaced manner.
Nano-sized metal clusters can be made of any metals and the thickness of the protecting layer of ligand can be tailored by choosing suitable ligands. This forms the base for the ordered positioning of the clusters in one, two and or dimensions. By the right spacer and size of the quantum dots, single electron tunnelling can be achieved on surfaces, in channels and cavities. This can lead to true future nano electronics. The task of the applying teams is to combine expertise in inorganic chemistry, structural chemistry, solution chemistry, electron microscopy and solid state physics. This will permit a concerted approach to understanding and developing of new material. Large groups and institutes in Japan and the US are presently devoting their efforts towards new nanoelectronics, but the suggested constellation of research groups constitutes and solid state physics. Large groups and institutes in Japan and the US are presently devoting their efforts towards new nano electronics, but the suggested constellation of research groups constitutes a unique new combinations of ideas for synthesis, positioning and characterization of structure and properties.
The scientific research in this project involves six academic institutions from four countries and all are selected for their complementary "expertise" in chemistry or physics. The project has been designed to open the doors between physics and chemistry, thereby exchanging ideas, scientist and skills. There will be at least one post doc associate working on this project in each institution and often coupled to a Ph.D. project. This will give excellent training in the traditional boards of chemistry and physics for up to ten young European scientists.
