Tools for the Omi

Objectif

TOMI is aimed at providing the missing methods and tools of basic ESDA (Electronic System Design Automation) frameworks, that makes practical the OMI concept of Supercell based system design. As a generic objective, the project aims to provide methods and tools that can reduce system development cost and time and improve quality.

Hardware design has reached levels of complexity that are making necessary a change in the design processes. Nowadays, several designers are involved in the system development, working at abstraction levels similar to those of software designers. However, there is a considerable shift in time in the evolution of the methods, techniques and supporting environments used at both worlds. It is well known the increase in productivity and quality that reusability, cooperative work support and quality control measurement techniques and tools have provided to software development.
TOMI is going to be centered on integrating these techniques supported by a tool set into the hardware systems development. In this context, TOMI's developments are going to be centered on the keys for improvement and success in this domain, based on three major, interdependent, pillars:

- The ability of the OMI vendors and users community to handle an increasing amount of Supercells competing for the market. This translates into a Management Environment able to deal with multiple, continuously improving, and concurrent versions. It also means the need of environments able to support the different Supercells views needed to make the "open" idea really operative. The development of a Configuration management system tailored to hardware design in VHDL will also improve the cooperative work and the systems maintainability.
- The ability of the OMI vendors and users community to analyse the quality of the OMI products (Supercells) with respect to different aspects. Considering the levels of complexity reached by actual systems descriptions, the customization of quality metrics for the design with Supercells is a crucial functionality in order to guarantee shorter and more reliable design development cycles. Standards Compliance is an important issue in this context, since it is the best way to guarantee wide market in an "open" environment.
- The ability of the OMI vendor and user community to deal with ever more complex designs (Supercells or Supercells-based Systems) providing at the same time high quality products and low time to market. This means the need of good estimators and methods to help the designer to choose the best solution for his/her problem in a fast and reliable way, enabling us to go from system conception to silicon in easier and safer way.
The TOMI project will provide methods and tools to support the OMI Supercell based design supported on these three pillars. TOMI will also demonstrate the benefits in the use of these tools in an industrial Telecom application. TOMI will develop tools to help the designer or vendor to manage complex designs or libraries, and will also develop tools to assess the quality and evaluate performances of the Supercells and Supercells-based designs. All these developments will be applied in the design of a Telecom circuit that will include a SPARC Supercell as the core of a high speed modem.
In order to achieve the project's goals, the TOMI consortium consist of a set of complementary organizations, it means, that their synergetic cooperation covers the overall design cycle. Each partner targets a different business area and their contributions to the project are focused on improving their positions at their respective business area. This consortium consist of:

- Technology providers: LEDA, UPM, TGI.
- Foundry Services: ES2.
- Industrial User: TI+D.
- CAD Vendor: LEDA.
The TOMI consortium brings together technical experience, technical know-how, past involvement in the OMI and market and technical leadership.
It is the purpose of the TOMI partners to play a significant role in making Supercell based system design along the OMI lines a commercial reality. The activity presented by other activities undertaken by the partners.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
