Enterprise integration - international consensus

Objectif

The application of enterprise integration technologies has been hampered by a lack of business justification, and many seemingly conflicting solutions and terminology, and by an insufficient understanding of the technology by the end-user community. These barriers inhibit, or at least delay, the use of relevant methods and tools in industry, especially SMEs.

At the same time, the need is intensifying to operate agilely, to form and dissolve partnerships rapidly, and to integrate business discourse internationally. The Working Group aims to define plans to work through barriers so that the technology will be accepted and implemented by the business community. To reach this goal the Working Group has the following objectives:
- broaden the consensus of harmonised enterprise integration technology solutions in the international R&D community
- establish and international forum to identify and eliminate barriers to enterprise integration technology utilisation and to communicate successful implementations.
- support and plan for harmonisation of enterprise integration related technology and standards to eliminate barriers
- increase public awareness on and recognition of enterprise integration benefits through information dissemination on consensus results with focus on the industrial community.

Using the experience gained in the previous EU/US collaboration project in 1991/92, the Working Group will identify major issues in business and enterprise integration and will organise a series of workshops with experts in the field trying to resolve or at least reduce these issues and thereby increase international consensus on enterprise integration. The results from the different workshops will be presented in a follow-on conference (ICEIMT'97 - International Conference on Enterprise Integration Modelling Technology '97) which will provide the opportunity for further workshops and increase consensus. Conference proceedings and publications of additional papers will make the results publicly available.

To increase awareness and acceptance in the industrial community, the Working Group will organise special workshops and seminars targeted at potential industrial users of enterprise integration. At these events the results of the consolidation work will be presented together with papers reporting benefits obtained in selected applications of business and enterprise integration.

Creating awareness on business and enterprise integration technology will help to prepare European industry, both users and vendors of enterprise integration technology, for global competition. Integration across boundaries becomes an essential pre-requisite for success, especially for SMEs, who are mostly part of a value adding chain.
