Objective
The Memoir project will demonstrate the applicability and integration of advanced distributed multimedia systems to help manage diverse technical information sources in two pan-European R&D-based corporations. Large companies which are heavily dependent on the effectiveness of their R&D function face a particularly acute problem in providing effective means for their research, technical support and sales staff to access and share common technical information. The results of Memoir will help answer such problems.
The demonstration systems developed during the project will show that the same source information can be productively accessed via a single multimedia information infrastructure by users with very different information requirements. The use of such a multimedia information infrastructure can substantially increase the productivity of researchers and other technical information users.
The key information technologies to be integrated into a multimedia system solution for large distributed R&D corporations include:
--document management systems.
- hypermedia link services.
- autonomous software agents.
The Memoir project consortium brings together organisations from four EU member states to tackle the problem. All participants are leaders in their fields, and all have complementary business and technical objectives. Both Unichema International, a leading oleochemicals company, and Glaxo Wellcome R&D have identified the application of advanced IT to managing technical information as a key strategic technical capability, and will provide a strong corporate end-user drive for the project.
Technological development will be provided by Ibex Computing, producers of the Dawn document management system, Multicosm, hypermedia link service technology developers, and the University of Athens, well-known for its work on multi-agent systems. The Parallel Applications Technology Centre in the UK will provide project management and systems integration expertise, together with the skills for effective deployment of leading-edge information technologies.
All the participants are strongly committed to obtaining results from the project that can be exploited both internally for corporate information systems and in developing solutions for external clients. The high level of executive commitment demonstrated will enable project participants to be highly effective in informing and influencing information management strategies in other research-oriented companies.
