Computer-based assistance to maintenance tasks

Objetivo

The objective of the Assist project is to integrate the techniques of Intelligent Training Systems (ITSs) and Equipment Emulation into a coherent tool set for building of Computer Based Training (CBT) Systems and utilise them for pilot applications development. These applications are selected from two completely different areas in order to ensure the generic approach and flexibility of the tool set and allow the introduction into a broader market.

The target applications of Assist relate to maintenance jobs, where it is important to present the trainee with realistic interactive simulation of difficult situations and coach him by diagnosing and correcting his mistakes. In this area, traditional CBT technologies are already in use and for that reason the training media is accepted and operational. Even though Assist will emphasize the integration of ITS and Equipment Emulation into CBT all known multimedia applications will be utilised where appropriate.
Nowadays Computer Based Training (CBT) represents a cost effective solution for training of personnel in many sectors of industry and services. In the last decade a novel technology for CBT has been emerging, Intelligent Training Systems (ITSs), which couples domain and tutoring knowledge bases to sophisticated techniques for dialogue management, explanation production and session planning. ITSs have been applied up to now to train operators of complex physical systems such as power plants, aircraft and other specialised technical artefacts which require the presence of human operators to ensure efficient, reliable and safe operation.
Meanwhile advanced multidimensional graphics and navigation techniques that conform to the paradigm of Virtual Reality have been developed and applied to many sectors, including education and training. Equipment Emulation is a recently developed CBT technology in which the functionality and appearance of technical equipment is reproduced on a computer screen. It has the nature of desktop Virtual Reality, so that the user can navigate around and interact with the emulated equipment at will. The user does this by means of a mouse, joystick or other standard computer input device. Three-dimensional computer graphics are used to represent different views of the equipment and it responds to user actions in exactly the same way as the real equipment would. The emulation is based upon a comprehensive functional model of the real equipment and this includes the capability of reproducing the effects of fault conditions.
Therefore both technologies are mature enough for a generic practical implementation:
- They can work together synergically in CBT applications.
- They are available on low-cost computing platforms, such as PCs.
- They can be distributed to a broad community of users without requiring huge hardware investments.
A further objective of Assist is to measure the improvements that this novel CBT technology will introduce compared to the current practices.
The challenge and possibility of fully automating a training practice which is currently taking place in a classroom environment is extremely appealing to our consortium. Benefits should hence pertain to three areas:
- reduction of training costs related to human trainers and relocation of personnel to training sites;
- harmonisation and uniformisation of the training practice;
- better formalisation and documentation of the training practice which should also considerably lessen development costs in a range of similar applications.
The success of Assist will make advanced CBT solutions available for a wide range of commercial application areas: Manufacturing industries (automotive, mechanical parts and pieces, huge machinery, etc.); Processing industries (oil and gas, energy, chemicals); and Services (financial, administrative, education).
