Automated generalisation new technology

Objetivo

The objective of the project is to conduct methodological research using an multi-agent-based approach to map generalisation.

Specific innovations will be in the domains of cartography, GIS and computer science:

- cartographic innovation: treatment of the map as a system of relationships between objects, adoption of holistic solutions, the modelling of competing map-design objectives and the embedding of design knowledge at the object level;
- GIS innovation: extension of multi-agent techniques applicable to broader issues such as database generalisation, conflation of databases and mechanisms for supporting spatial analysis in general;
- computer science innovation: This project will be a unique test for the use of high level agents, both in modelling strategy and local autonomy of agents in spatial decision making applied to map design.

Collectively, the project will enhance expertise in multi-agent techniques and design systems in GIS in Europe. More precisely, the project will achieve the definition and modelling of behaviours of "geographical agents and structures" in the context of generalisation. This includes:

- mechanisms to select and display agents,
- mechanisms to validate agent actions,
- and the definition of strategies and dynamics that resolve competition among agents.

In order to validate the methodological research, the Project will focus on two prototypes for the fully automated design of multi-scale thematic representations: a professional tool and a public information desk.

The need for automated map design systems in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is well documented. The research topic continues to attract significant attention in both the research and commercial sectors. This research proposal acknowledges the multitude of generalisation algorithms currently in existence, but is required because:

- existing generalisation algorithms operate in isolation of one another,
- they do not assess their collective success in reaching a solution,
- they therefore require a highly interactive environment and users who have good cartographic knowledge.

Furthermore, current techniques fail to take into account two fundamental requirements for successful generalisation: the geographical nature of the objects themselves and their relationships with one another. These shortcomings have stymied advances in automated generalisation systems and GIS in general.

The project team consists of three groups:

- research teams from three research centres with specialist expertise in cartography, topological modelling and multi-agent techniques.

Each team has undertaken projects in these domains;

- a GIS system developer who will provide the experimental platforms and algorithmic quality control;
- a map publisher (a National Mapping Agency) capable of assessing the quality and robustness of map products and ease of use of the system.

Each partner has worked with at least one other partner before.
