Global travel hotel and entertainment resources

Objectif

To demonstrate the business processes improvements in the Tourism sector by exploiting the competitive advantage provided through Internet-based multimedia services

The project will be based upon the creation of a large central multimedia database that will be populated with tourist information and with electronic versions of major tour operators' brochures. A significant sample of travel agencies will be used to check the actual impact of the system on the current business practices. Each travel agency will receive a local PC with modem and a color printer that will allow the browsing of the multimedia brochures as well as the printing of selected subsets of information (Web pages) configuring a personalized brochure for each customer. Additionally, a self-service multimedia kiosk, that will access the same database with a modified man-machine interface, will be installed in selected travel agencies and in some public places to test the acceptance of such a system. The cultural aspects related to tourism will be one of the key elements to be considered in the multimedia content selection.
The Tourism industry represents a growing business area fostering the economic growth of countries worldwide and very especially in Europe. Spain and Italy are two of the most visited countries in the world and there is an ever-growing demand for tourism services in the Mediterranean area both from inside and outside the European Union.
The end users (tourists) are becoming more and more demanding in the type and quality of services required. Currently, most of the agencies offer similar packages and in many instances the only real differentiation in the customer's eyes is price. In addition, higher levels of customization are being demanded since each traveler tries to organize his/her trip with more and more variations from the basic package.
A set of parameters both for business and technical aspects as well as the metrics needed to check the impact and success of the system will be defined during the early phases of the project. These parameters will be monitored from the deployment of the system onwards to check the validity and acceptance of the system.
GOTHERE's implementation and exploitation will allow a higher perceived added value from the travel agencies and, as a result, it will promote the growth of the Tourism industry. This is particularly important for the EU country members represented in the proposal since Tourism is one of the most important sources of revenue for these countries.
GOTHERE pursues the following objectives:
- Convert the Internet threat into a source of competitive advantage for the travel agencies (the majority of which are SMEs)
- Demonstrate the achievable cost reductions in information dissemination introducing the concept of the electronic multimedia catalog with on-site printing capabilities
- Improve the existing last minute offer distribution system both from a cost and from a reliability standpoint
- Improve personnel productivity and reduce training costs for the travel agencies through the introduction of specialized browsing and package selection software (search engine)
- Generate a baseline on the issues related to multimedia introduction in the tourism business value chain
- Obtain detailed information on the tourists' response to multimedia self-service terminals
- Test the advantages of multimedia systems as a tourism promotion tool sponsored by the Public Administrations.
- Create a framework of multimedia tourist information that can be easily used for cultural tourism package creation and promotion
