Travel reservation and interactive purchase

Objectif

Customers will benefit from the ability to choose from a wider range of services with simplified booking arrangements. Travel agents will offer value added services to their core business and retain a critical lead over direct sellers offering tele-sales via the Internet. They will also be able to diversify into the supply of services. SME operators will gain access to the lucrative global travel market. This will assist in opening up large underdeveloped areas of Europe to the tourism market through easier access to the market and at lower costs. In addition to providing marketing, promotion and booking services TRIP will also deliver a fully operational reservation system for local use by these operators so that live reservation information may be exchanged for global access.
A fully developed multimedia TRIP commerce engine will be available for use by travel agents to browse and purchase services throughout Europe. Access to the interface will be via the Internet, providing a powerful force to attract Non European travellers to European destination as a result of better promotion of European products globally. A unique feature of this system is the development of a new pre-sales service "The Virtual tour operator". This facility will allow intelligent searches for SME operator products based on customers criteria. Customers will be provided with a multimedia brochure of only products that meet their interest, thus improving customer fit.
At present most holiday packages are controlled by a very small number of major holiday tour operators. This puts a tight control on the expansion and development of the SME leisure market as most SME's only have the option of selling to these operators. TRIP will help to stimulate economic growth in the SME market by allowing them direct access to the global reservation market backed up by low cost promotion and marketing. This will dramatically lower the barrier of entry into the market. At the same time it will act as powerful competition to new services developing in the USA which threaten to bypass the European travel agent industry
The project will create a comprehensive network covering all areas of commerce including support for initial contact , pre sales, transactions, post sales and marketing information. The project focuses clearly on commerce piloting and not technology development (which accounts for less than 25% of the budget)
A key feature of the project isthe evaluation of the benefit that is delivered in each of these areas. Each partner has a well identified business plan for the subsequent commercialisation of the TRIP deliverables.

A formal return on capital invested has been calculated for each partner so that the benefits of the project, in clear financial terms, can be understood. The major benefits however will be the strengthening of the EU tourism market for the benefit of all EU agents and operators.
The mission of this project is to deliver a working electonic commerce infrastructure by the year 2000 for the European travel market to the benefit of Travel Agents, SME leisure operators and their customers.
