STRUCTURAL CHANGE AND PUBLIC POLICY IN THE EUROPEAN FOOD IND USTRY

Objective

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO REVIEW AND ANALYSE CAUSES OF MAJOR STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN THE CONSUMER, DISTRIBUTION AND MANUFACTURER ELEMENTS OF THE EUROPEAN FOOD CHAIN AND TO SUGGEST WAYS IN WHICH PUBLIC POLICIES ;IGHT BE USED TO INFLUENCE DEVELOPMENTS.

AS A PART OF THE PROJECT CASE STUDIES WERE UNDERTAKEN OF HIGH VALUE LOW VOLUME (SALMON) AND LOW VALUE HIGH VOLUME PRODUCTS (DISTRIBUTION LABEL GROCERIES). A SURVEY OF EXPERT OPINION IN TO FUTURE TRENDS IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE FOOD CHAIN SOLICITED VIEWS FROM MORE THAN 100 PERSONS FROM THE 10 COMMUNITY COUNTRIES (BEFORE THE ENTRY OF SPAIN AND PORTUGAL) REPRESENTING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, ACADEMICS AND TRADE ASSOCIATIONS AS WELL AS ALL SECTORS OF THE FOOD CHAIN.
