Improved removal of particulate contaminants from surfaces to increase functionality and appearance of products (REPART)

Objective

This project will focus on the problem of removing particulate contaminants from surfaces by development of improved cleaning chemicals and procedures. This will also include particle analysis and design of eco-efficient processes. Chemical and mechanical methods will be combined to improve the cleaning efficiency. A new method of applying mechanical forces at the point of the attachment of the particle, using electroosmosis is proposed. The project will result in less cassation, higher quality, longer lifetime and a higher functionality of products as well as a lower production cost and a higher customer value. The improvement of the cleaning efficiency in combination with the increased recycling of water and process chemicals will also lead to reduced waste and lower consumption of resources.
After finalising the project work with this issue we achieved the following deliverables:
General delivarable:
1. -Improved technology level on particle removal.
Specifc deliverables:
2. - Optimised surfactants for use in formulations for the particle cleaning case at Sandvik, Volvo and Philips;
- Chemical formulations optimised for the selected case study;
- Evaluation of chemical systems-pilot plant:
3. - Optimisation of cleaning chemicals and process for interior of seemless stainless steel tubes, post-pilgering operations;
- Improved removal of lapping paste residues from aluminium surfaces, using an aqueous cleaning medium;
- Optimisation of the cleaning process for air bearing;
4. - Dev of new method - electroosmosis and interesting preliminary results with the method combined with other methods;
- Evaluation of electro-osmosis for removal of particulate contaminants from polyimide-coated glass plates;
5. - Results on optimal use of ultrasound cleaning;
6. - CO2 cleaning has been demonstrated for two case studies, e.g snow cleaning for removal of particulate contaminants from polyimide-coated glass plates, but the risks with the method was pointed out;
7. - Overview of analytical methods for particle related problems:
-Development of a new, easy particle sampling and analysis method for metal surfaces;
- Development of a new system for lab scale evaluation of novel systems for metal surfaces based on reproducible contamination and analysis methodology.
8. - Evaluation of particle separation technologies;
- Interaction between surfactants and separation technologies are evaluated;
- Rinse water requirements are evaluated;
- Rinse water recycling system has been developed.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
