Global optimisation of disc cutter tool life for tunnel boring machines

Objective

Tunnelling plays an important role in the development of transportation systems. The GOODLIFE project intends to improve the excavation with tunnel boring machines (TBM) in hard and mixed ground conditions.

The objectives are:
a) To increase the excavation advancement speed by 50%. There is a large potential for reduced excavation costs by only small improvements in the ring steel quality (hardening, steel composition);
b) To improve the design of the disc cutter properties in relation to the ground conditions;
c) To improve the design of the TBM cutter head in relation to disc cutter placement spacing and size;
d) To make the replacement of the disc cutter safer and more efficient;
e) To adapt and begin the standardisation process of rock and steel test;
f) To develop software tools for the design of disc cutters and TBM cutter heads.

The consortium puts together all the actors of the field (one TBM operator, one TBM and one Disc Cutter manufacturer with three specialised research centres) and will allow for the first time to adopt an integrated approach.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
