New environmentally friendly technology for cellulose three-dimensional objects

Objective

The aim of this proposal is to develop an efficient, non-polluting processing to produce massive 3D cellulose objects-sponge, insulation foams, or composite matrix. Recently, a new process-based on direct dissolution of cellulose in NMMO-has been developed for two-dimensional objects. To adapt this process to massive three-dimensional objects, the change from the old viscose sponges will be the reference. The objectives are to replace the old polluting viscose process for sponges by a new near zero waste NMMO process and to produce three-dimensional object with the NMMO technology and develop their use replacing synthetic non-biodegradable polymers. A cooperation between industrials and academic laboratories specialized in cellulose and polymers will lead after three year to a lab-scale pilot for producing cellulose sponges.
