Microscale fabrication of graded materials components (MICROMAKING)

Objective

Micromechanics is a growing field for a wide set of applications from electronics to medicine and is urging the development of narrower scale production techniques. A design approach to a material for a certain need is becoming feasible, accompanied by the possibility then to synthesize the material. Powder technologies allow to choose the materials structure and phase assembly.

Particle sizes can be controlled easily below 1 micron and grain sizes can be down to 20 nm, with enhanced mechanical properties and sinterability. It is proposed a new manufacturing technology in which the most advanced powder technologies are combining with the most advanced small scale sintering technologies into a truly microscale fabrication and manufacturing technology, called Micromaking, able to shape solid objects with tolerances of the order of few microns.
