Objective
Leakage is the principal cause of faults in numerous installations from simple waterline to petrol pumping station. Furthermore, temperatures and operating pressures of industrial installations have increased and pressure of several hundred bars and temperature approaching 1000°C are no longer marginal. Consequently, gasket materials and design must evolutes, and especially now that asbestos is forbidden. This project consequently aims at developing a new gasket able to withstand much higher temperature and requiring much lower eating loads than currently existing ones thanks to the use of new materials, already set up for other advanced technologies, for which manufacturing and transforming processes are known. The project will not be successful only by combining different materials or substituting the currently used materials with the new ones. One innovation of the project is really to combine advanced knowledge of new materials properties with new improvements in design, processing and combination technologies.
Main achievements at the end of the project are:
WP1: Specifications for each of the target applications
WP1 & WP2 : Exhaustive list of materials (metals and ceramics based on zirconia) complying with the targeted applications, their properties and their performancesq
WP3 : gasket designs for sealing application to be further investigated
WP4 & WP5 : Gaskets prototypes and validations of their performances (lab-scale & operating conditions
