Objective
Leakage from corroded storage tanks, especially their floors, is a major environmental, economic and safety hazard, thus regular inspection of the structural integrity of the world supply of tanks is essential. However external inspection is in principle inadequate, whilst at present all available internal inspection techniques involve emptying the tanks, an expensive, time consuming and hazardous process frequently involving transport of dangerous products to distant alternative storage sites, unacceptable exposure of workers to chemicals during the cleaning operation and weeks of lost production whilst the tank is out of service. The aim of this RTD proposal is to create an amphibious autonomous vehicle, which will enter these tanks internally and inspect their structural integrity without having to empty them.
