Objective
The idea to the project is generated in the EU-Thematic Network-Foundry Waste. The organic materials used as binders and additives in the mould sand cores for the production of iron castings create severe working environment and external environment problems. Coal dust is an additive used in greensand (clay bonded moulding sand). 80% of the iron castings produced are made in greensand moulds containing coal dust. The rest is made in organic chemical bonded moulds. Avoiding coal dust or other organic coal dust substitutes will create a more healthy and clean working environment in the iron foundries and at the same time give a sand waste far less contaminated with organic compounds more suitable for reuse in other industries. The objectives are to improve the environment, by the development of a new greensand for high production moulding in iron foundries by using inorganic additives instead of coal dust, giving as good castings quality as ordinary greensand. The objectives will be advanced through laboratory RTD, pseudo-industrial test casting, prototype test in industrial scale, and intensive dissemination of the results.
