An end-of-life of product system (AEOLOS)

Objetivo

As we enter the new millenium, a new perspective is required with regard to production, consumption and disposal. Sustainable Development (SD) encompasses not only environmental but also economic and societal issues. An assessment of the sustainability of any strategy, therefore, necessitates an initial quantitative and qualitative analysis of the economic, environmental and social (EES) impact of any proposed action, followed by a comparative analysis of disparate elements. Optimisation for SD requires trade-offs between multiple criteria. AEOLOS addresses all aspects of sustainability, and presents the complementarity between different EOL treatment levels based on EEs issues exemplified through EOL treatment of Electric and Electronic Equipment (EEE). The integrated methodology and tool set will enable policy makers to determine EOL policy based on EEs criteria so as to ensure least environmental load whilst also taking account of the economic and social aspects.
1.Overview of methodology;
2.Application of methodology for all users;
3.Selected algorithms for indicators and indices;
4.Software prototype customised for all users;
5.State of the Art on Sustainability Indicators.

1.Overview of methodology: The AEOLOS methodology is presented, in part, on the Internet as part of "The AEOLOS service Network";
2.Application of methodology for all users: The full version of the AEOLOS Methodology is presented as an internal deliverable methodology report (D5.2 version 1: The AEOLOS Methodology), and a "handbook" (D5.2 version 2: The AEOLOS Handbook). These documents are available for all consortium partners to use in their businesses. The methodology is a service or product that could also be sold to consultants to use with clients. The full methodology is copyrighted. Currently, the methodology is applied specifically to WEEE, but is applicable to other waste streams;
3.Selected algorithms for indicators and indices: The algorithms used to calculate the environmental, social and economic indicators as part of the AEOLOS methodology and software tool;
4.Software prototype customised all users: Prototype software (Integrated Toolset) handling End Of Life Treatment based on WEEE directive, developed on basis of the AEOLOS methodology. Potential users are manufacturers, remanufacturers, recyclers, local authorities and consultants. A graphical user interface (GUI) has continuously been updated throughout the project, to produce a current version that reflects the AEOLOS methodology. A user manual has been prepared in association with the software;
5.State of the Art on Sustainability Indicators: This is the result of an extensive review of sustainability initiatives and indicators, world-wide.
