Organic matrix composites and iconel allows: improvements in their machining under low coolant flows and dry conditions

Objective

Two very important groups of engineering materials are organic matrix composites and inconel alloys. These classes of materials can be differentiated from other materials by the extreme difficulty encountered during machining. These operations require higher fluid flows, longer machining times and encounter high tool wear. During the fabrication of large components with any of these two materials, such as aircraft wings and large turbine blades for electric power generators, it is not possible to perform the whole production with a single tool, The changes in tool lead to high costs and a loss of precision in the final component. The present project aims to develop a new series of effectively self-lubricating coating/hard coating/new tool combinations, which aim to increase the cutting speed for both materials in the range of high speed and super- high speed machining. It is also a key objective of this project to reduce the need for cutting fluids and to increase the machining precision. The partnership includes expertise in all relevant areas: end use/machining of materials, machine tools, tools design and manufacture, tool coatings and modellisation.
