Objective
This project aims to reduce the amount of zinc chemicals, predominantly zinc oxide, in rubber articles such as tyres. Zinc released to the environment is toxic to aquatic organisms, so will bear upon the food chain. Most of the zinc oxide is chemically unutilised. Ways of halving zinc oxide levels without causing deleterious effects on article performance will be investigated, and also innovative alternatives to conventional zinc oxide that aim to reduce the zinc present by 65-100%. Some of the alternatives could lead to radical changes in the chemistry of vulcanisation of rubber articles. Software will be developed to enable rapid evaluation of the impact of reduced-zinc formulations on the environment and on the service performance of the rubber article. There is much to defend in a European rubber industry that currently turns over 35 B Euro pa.
