Objective
The project aims at solving this problem of Europ. Machine tools (MT) builders: reduce the weight of machine structures while maintaining the same cost (compare to conventional ones) and increasing their performances in terms of speed, accel, accuracy The goals will be reached by using innovative high stiffness, light weight materials, not only considering their inherent structural properties but also their space location, joint interfaces, related process technique. The innovative aspects of ULMAT are related to comprehensive and integrated material-product-process approach considering the optimal use of available material (Al-alloy, steel sandwich, High Strain Steel) together with the optimal application and low-cost processing of innovative materials(Al -honeycomb, fibres-polymer matrix composite, ultra-light alloy) .The results are:3 ultra-light machine tools demonstrators.
