In-cell optical functions for advanced liquid crystal displays

Objective

Rapid growth of mobile telecommunications, is creating a need for mobile liquid crystal displays to become capable of handling graphics and video. Greater performance levels will be required in terms of e.g. resolution, wide viewing-angle, brightness, robustness, size and weight (thinner and lighter). Presently, LCD's require a variety of optical foils to be added eternally in order to obtain an acceptable performance level, the main drawback being that significant additional thickness is added. The proposal objective is to devise new materials and processes to enable functional optical layers to be built in to the structure of the display. The key technology will be utilisation of the anisotropic properties of liquid crystal polymers to create the optical components. It is expected that these materials, effects and technologies will also find use in other applications requiring anisotropic optical effects.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
