Objective The manufacture of miniature (sheet = 20micron, bulk=1mm) engineering components falls between the micro- and general-engineering processing capability of material-conversion industries; consequently, the manufacturers of items, which are required by the transducer, medical appliance, consumer white-goods and aerospace industries, are dependent on craft knowledge. The proposed research will define the plastic-deformation characteristics of miniature materials; this will enable the formulation of exact Finite Element models of processes to support the concurrent design of component and process for the forming of miniature components. A new generation of forming machinery, which utilise piezo- excitation and activation of tools, will be developed to effect the controlled forming of miniature components. The output are a prototype machine with required enhancement and component-design methodology.
