Photocalytic innovative coverings applications for depollution assessment

Objectif

The phenomena of facades soiling and staining is probably as old as cities themselves. but industrial pollution has only exacerbated the problems with impacts on both the quality of the urban environment and the life cycle cost of buildings. To make a substantial contribution to this issue a novel class of building coverings either, cementitious matrix based or translucid coatings to allow architectural diversity, will be developed. Such materials show de-soiling and de-polluting properties as they are able to degrade, through heterogenous photo-catalytic reactions induced by titanium dioxide present in their matrix, nitrogen oxides as well as various organic pollutants.

Actually, to make applicable such technology in a real urban environment is necessary to study more in depth the behaviour and modes of applications of these new innovative coverings exhibiting photocatalytic properties. The whole approach will aim to reduce the cost and increase the performances of the innovative coverings for sheet-like applications in order to make available affordable, really sustainable products whose large applications may, combined with already existing techniques, improve the quality of urban built environment.
