Objective
The MATRA project provides a new method for machining of glass materials. By researching a solid-state laser beam guiding system the multiple absorption effect in transparent glass materials will be available which allows an efficient and various cutting of most probably all glass materials up to thickness d = 20 mm. By integrating a high-power laser source into tailored glass machines cutting processes with high contour reliability and without glass damages can be carried out. It is expected to achieve both higher yields and high quality compared to current technologies. Because of the involvement of the main glass manufacturers the acceptance for this unique technology will be high in the more traditional glass industry and manufacturers of other amorphous materials.
