Objective
SmartWeld will develop East European welding innovation with West European science, QA and power plant expertise. A consortium of manufacturers and utilities will develop new consumables for creep resisting steels, designed to refurbish old polluting plant in Eastern Europe, improving environmental standards and carbon dioxide emissions. Performance will be validated by microstructural modelling and advanced high temperature testing. SmartWeld will develop "smart" consumables which match the steel to be welded, make joints with lower stresses, and produce welds with better reliability. Analysis will demonstrate the promise of trouble-free plant operation, saving inspection and repair costs. Procedures will be developed for manufacture, repair and welding onto service aged steels. Implementation will include plant refurbishment, manufacture of new lightweight components, code certification and commercialisation.
