External monitoring of kiln lining condition while in service

Objetivo

There is currently unfulfilled requirement for a device that can monitor the condition of cement kiln lingings while in service. This Step 2 proposal is intended to carry out research to produce such a device. Cement kilns are very long thick walled steel cyclindrical structures several metres indiameter. They rotate slowing during operation, reaching very temperatures. To protect the steel from the intense heat, the inside is lined with firebricks. The bricks cna be eroded or material can become accreted to the brick unevenly. Both conditions need to be monitored. At present, the only way to check the kiln lining condition is to stop the process and check manually from the inside - an expensive option. Not knowing the thickness prevents intelligent control of kiln operation. Stopping a kiln before it is really necessary reduces productivity per unit cement produced which increases running costs, increases volume of waste and reduces availability of the kiln which is used to dispose of vehicule tyres and chemical wastes. There is a large number of cement kilns throughout the EU of all of wich could improve productivity by the use of such a device.
