The research proposal concerns the application of heat flow measurement to instrument design and control of plastic processing moulds. It will optimise manufacturing conditions by driving the processes by the matter's state-dependent rheological parameters (understanding and characterization of the physical phenomena involved).
Large plastic parts;
- especially those for cars are currently manufactured by sequential injection with empirical control of the following three points:
- mould filling;
- shrinking due to cooling (monitoring of compacting and maintenance pressures);
- The plastic's crystallization threshold before extraction.
The expected outcomes of this research for industry are a >20% improvement in production rates, noticeably less waste, and above all the improved physical quality of the final products.
