Highspeed prototyping using a foot analogue which mimics the thermo regulatory mechanisms of the human foot during walking

Objectif

This project addresses two needs in the European footwear industry:
- Reliable, i.e. can be correlated with real wear experience, moisture disposal and thermal properties assessment in finished footwear
- Faster product development. To achieve these it is intended to produce a foot analogue, which mimics the thermo-regulatory mechanisms of the human foot during walking. This will be used for the basis of test protocols and guidelines, which will allow rapid, quantitative assessment of whole shoes, which can be correlated with real wear experience. Addressing these needs will strengthen the international competitiveness of the European footwear industry and help maintain jobs and skills within the Community. The industry manufactured 1200 million pairs in 1997 with an estimated retail value of 50 billion Euros. However, there is a continuing reduction in this manufacturing sector of around 5% per annum due to increasing competition from outside the Community.
