Objective
The problems of using the generally accepted "Best Available Technique" of carbon dioxide as a declaiming agent includes the inability to deli me full substance hide in comparable time-scale to that of traditional declaiming agents (ammonium salts). However, traditional carbon dioxide declaiming offers the advantage of being more environmentally friendly , having a considerably lower impact on tannery effluents. The objectives of this project will be to investigate methods for increasing the concentration of the declaiming agent carbon dioxide in the declaiming float such that full substance hide can be effectively deli med. Several alternatives will be investigated whereby either the carbon dioxide will be dissolved in water at elevated pressure before being directed into the non-pressurised declaiming vessels or the carbon dioxide will be directed into a sealed pressurised declaiming vessel. The effects of these treatments on the rate of declaiming, physical, mechanical and organoleptic properties of the leather will be investigated. Furthermore, preliminary screening of suitable bating enzymes for the pH obtained with carbon dioxide declaiming will be carried out.
