Innovative rubber compounds for the shoe industry

Objective

Using polymeric materials in the shoe industry for outsoles has allowed the progress in fashion and technology, but it has caused some problems in sole-to-upper bonding. Surface preparation of substrates is key to guarantee joints with good adhesion forces, becoming a critical step in footwear manufacturing. Unsuitable treatments imply unstitching problems during the shoes' storage and use, meaning claims and returns. Solvent and chemical treatments, harmful for workers and the environment, are used at footwear factories, prolonging production times and adding costs to the final product. This proposal aims the development of innovative rubber compounds for outsoles, with similar properties than currently used rubbers and good adhesion properties so that the need of surface preparation prior to bonding is avoided or at least reduced. Thus, this research can bring the following goals:
- Rubber formulations with improved compatibility with adhesives.
- Simplified manufacturing process, avoiding surface treatments, which also implies costs reduction.
- Elimination of hazardous chemicals, improving work safety conditions.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
