Objective
The market for optical fibre cable recycling will grow owing to increasing information flows, which result in more and more cables being laid. Because of this growing amount of waste of optical fibre cables, +/- 2.500.000 km in use in Europe, the SME companies intend to develop a recycling route for the optical fibre cables. This recycling route will be based on an existing principle for the recycling of other laminated products. With this recycling technology they can provide in European legislation in the future, which prohibits landfill. Incineration of the material brings very high costs and other negative environmental aspects. At this moment no recycling technique is available. The estimated quantity of optical fibre cables to be removed in Europe is almost 500.000 tonnes in 2015. The main objective of this proposal is achieving a technique which is both technically and economically feasible for recycling of optical fibre cable waste, generated today and in the future in Europe.
