Exploitable results

The combined machining by means of hard turning and honing in one high-precision hard turning lathe was investigated. The general aim was to substitute the conventional process chain of grinding and honing on two different machines. In the project knowledge about the combined process has been generated. Although the projects outcome did not meet the general aim regarding the economic efficiency the knowledge generated within the project can be used to reach this aim.
In this project the manufacturing of small bores with a diameter of 4-5 mm and a L/D (length-to-diameter) ratio of 5 by means of hard turning was enabled. This is a step way beyond the state of the art because up to now the maximum L/D ratio with which hard turning of bores could be realised was 3. In close co-operation of Hamoedia with the Fraunhofer IPT a solution was found to develop rigid tools, which enabled reliable machining of the small, bores in question within tolerances of 2-3 micons.
