Objective
The project focuses on a more efficient use of energy in terms of higher system efficiency for railway traction applications and lower fuel consumption via automotive electronics. Applications considered are the integrated starter generator and converter for electric hybrid vehicles and highly efficient converters for railway traction. A main project task faces the development of silicon chips (IGBTs and Power MOSFETs) usable for high-temperature operation. Power module technologies suitable for hot water cooling will be evaluated and the corresponding simulation models developed. System integration requires optimisation of thermal management, minimal thermal losses across the interfaces as well as new attempts in system cooling. Implementation of these new technologies will be accompanied by reliability tests at device, module and system levels airing the development of accelerated reliability test standards.
