Infrared microsystem for polluting emission control on cars

Objective

In this project, an optical on board sensor system will be developed to measure two specific exhaust gas components like NO, NO2, CH4, CO or CO2 with fast response times in the range of 10 ms. Early in the project, the sensor functional requirements and its integration into the vehicle system will be specified, addressing questions of sensor location (exhaust line, manifold, cylinder), components to be measured and general sensor layout. The system will be designed, build and tested in a laboratory environment first, in a later project phase a system for use on vehicles will be build and its function validated. This sensor system will allow component specific emission control strategies (e.g. EGR control for NOx, fuelling for HC), even in fast transient operating conditions and it will enhance diagnostics (OBD, engine functional diagnostics).
